iPhone X: Face ID will be limited to one face per phone Sep 14th 2017, 18:30, by Chris Smith With the iPhone X, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor is a goner and the future is Face ID. However, although unlocking your phone without touching is conceivably easier, the new biometric feature iOS is more limited than its predecessor in one major way. Apple has confirmed Face ID will only support one face per iPhone X handset. At least at launch, anyway. This means sharing access with family members becomes slightly less convenient than before (via TechCrunch). Touch ID supports five fingerprints in total, which allows users to have one digit on each hand and then maybe allow the wife and kids access too. Related: What is Face ID? While one-face-per-iPhone-X rule could scupper family sharing, it's not the end of the world. There's still the trusty passcode option to fall back on. The future of Face ID However, while iPhones are generally single-person devices, Face ID might become more of a complication if the firm rolls out the tech across the iPad range too. iPads are often communal devices used by the whole family, so it'll be interesting to see if the company opens up support for more than one user at a time. FaceID arrived in part due to the lack of space for a home button on the edge-to-edge iPhone X. It uses a new TrueDepth front-facing camera and an infrared sensor to scan the user's face. Apple says it's easy to enroll your device, while it has attention awareness to ensure it can't be fooled by a photograph. The tech adapts with time and can also be used to authenticate Apple Pay. Face data is stored inside the A11 Bionic chip and not sent anywhere else.
