"The Future" from Back to the Future II finally arrived in 2015 and some of the film's tech promises have (sort of) been fulfilled.

We have Nike sneakers with power laces, versions of 'hover boards' and Google co-founder Larry Page is even backing a flying car start-up called Kitty Hawk.

The airline is partnering with renewable fuels company Velocys to take hundreds of thousands of tonnes of trash destined for landfill and turn it into clean-burning, sustainable fuel.

Nappies, chocolate bar wrappers, plastic food containers and the like will be used to power several of the airline's transatlantic routes.

2050 pledge

In a press release the company wrote: "The planned plant will produce enough fuel to power all British Airways' 787 Dreamliner operated flights from London to San Jose, California and New Orleans, Louisiana for a whole year. It would be the first plant of this scale. The airline plans to supply its aircraft fleet with increasing amounts of sustainable jet fuel in the next decade."

The fuel produced will enable the airline to reduce greenhouse gasses by 60% compared with conventional fossil fuels. It'll also ensure 60,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide savings every year.

BA has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2050.
