Samsung Galaxy S9 tipped to arrive with 1,000fps image sensor Sep 21st 2017, 19:53, by Chris Smith Now the iPhone X is out of the way, it's time for the rumor mill to refocus on Samsung's next flagship Galaxy S series smartphones. And if this latest round of speculation is to be believed, the Galaxy S9, might beat Apple's latest smartphones hands down when it comes to the video camera. According to a report from ETNews in the firm's Korean homeland, Samsung has designed a new image sensor that can capture video at an incredible 1,000 frames per second. That would enable slow motion video capture more than 40 times faster than regular speed, beating out rivals like Sony's XZ Premium smartphone and Apple's new iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X range (240fps). The report says the sensor will enter mass production this November, which gives it plenty of time to sneak into the S9, expected early next year. Sources say the sensor is able to achieve the 1,000fps footage thanks to a dedicated processor with on-board memory. This will be able to store the frames without the need to commit them immediately to the camera app. Related: Galaxy S8 vs iPhone X While this sounds like a good solution, unless Samsung is packing the sensor with a LOT of memory, the 1,000fps footage is unlikely to last more than a few seconds. However, given how long it would take to watch the 1,0000 frames in slow motion, it's unlikely much more will be required. According to the report (via Forbes) Samsung is cleverly avoiding infringing upon Sony's existing patents in this area by slightly altering the design of the sensor used in the XZ Premium.
