Microsoft Mixed Reality event set for October 3 — here's what to expect Sep 18th 2017, 18:49, by Chris Smith Microsoft is hosting a Windows Mixed Reality event on October 3. The company has sent out invites to members of the media for the gathering in San Francisco. The event is likely geared towards showing off the final versions of third-party headsets before they go on sale on October 17. The likes of Dell, HP and Acer have all created Mixed Reality headsets, which will go on sale around the same time the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is released. Related: Windows Mixed Reality headsets explained It's possible we may see more headsets, given Asus debuted its MR device at IFA 2017 (pictured). It's also possible we'll see a host of experiences designed for the Windows Mixed Reality Platform. Microsoft says the event will give everyone the opportunity to see "where Microsoft is headed next." HoloLens 2? Not so fast… If you're already getting your hopes up for a new version of HoloLens, it might be wise to temper those expectations. Although the firm is developing a version with a dedicated artificial intelligence chip, The Verge says that may not turn up until 2019. Microsoft seems focused on the mixed reality arena, whereas the likes of Oculus, HTC, Samsung and Google are hedging their bets on virtual reality. For what it's worth, with ARKit, Apple is seemingly following Microsoft's lead. The secretive Magic Leap company still has a massive hand to play too. Is mixed reality the way forward?
