Here's our guide to the Google Home Mini release date, features, price, news and UK launch. The smart speaker industry is booming, and Google played a great early hand with the launch of the Google Home. But at £129, it's hardly a cheap gadget to pick up on a whim. In a bid to get more people using devices powered by Google Assistant, Google is reportedly working on a new, smaller version of the Google Home – and it's supposedly called the Google Home Mini. This Google Home Mini will be a direct competitor to the Amazon Echo Dot, which is a diminutive (and cheaper) spin-off from Amazon's Alexa-powered Echo smart speaker. It'll give Google a chance to flog speakers at a newly-lowered price point, and make it cheaper for us all to kit out our homes with smart AI tech. Read on for all the details. The original Google Home was announced back in May 2016, and then launched in the USA in November that same year. It eventually made its way to the UK in April 2017, followed by Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and Japan later in the year. The Google Home Assistant, meanwhile, is expected to launch imminently. Google has already confirmed a major product launch event to take place in San Francisco on October 4, where we're expecting to see the new Google Pixel 2 smartphone debuted. But it's also looking likely that the event will also be used to showcase the Google Home Mini. The bad news is that even if the Google Home Mini launch date is October 4, that says nothing about a proper retail release. It could be days, weeks, or even months before such a speaker makes it to UK store shelves. Of course, we'll update you on the finer Google Home Mini release date details when we've got more information. Thanks to the leak, we've been graced with a series of images depicting what the Google Home Mini smart speaker is supposedly going to look like. It's apparently going to be powered (rather than wireless, like the Echo Tap), and will feature a fabric material similar to what we've seen from the Google Daydream View virtual reality headset. While specs info is limited, we'd imagine that the Google Home Mini will sport all the same Google Assistant functionality as the Google Home proper, but with fewer far-field microphones and less impressive audio capabilities overall. That all said, Google has yet to make any official announcements regarding a Google Home Mini, so take all leaks with due caution until we hear the truth from Google. The full-sized Google Home speaker currently retails at £129 in the UK and $129 in the USA. The latest word on the Google Home Mini price is that it'll cost you just $49 in the USA – and that probably means £49 for UK buyers, given recent pricing precedent. For contrast, that's marginally more expensive than the rival Amazon Echo Dot, which is selling for $44.49 in the USA right now. However, it's the same price as the Echo Dot in the UK, with current pricing set at £49.99.
