When HTC announced a standalone virtual reality headset earlier this year, reaction was somewhat subdued. We're still not entirely sure what the headset will be called, where it will be released, how much it will cost, or even when we'll get our hands on it. Still, there's no question that a self-powered, wire-free spin-off from the hugely successful HTC Vive headset would be welcome amongst enthusiasts. The good news, however, is that we might now have an inkling of what the device's name will be. Until now, HTC has described the device as "Vive Standalone VR", but a pair of trademark filings from the company (spotted by UploadVR) refer to a new product called "Vive Focus". Tellingly, the filings are associated with a "head-mounted display" device, and were filed only last week in both the USA and Europe. Given that HTC isn't rumoured to be working on other headsets at this stage, it seems very likely that Vive Focus will be the final name for the new product. Earlier this year, we learned that the new Vive headset would run on Google's Daydream VR platform, and that it would run on the powerful new Snapdragon 835 processor built by US chip-making giant Qualcomm – a platform we've seen used to power other flagship devices like the well-reviewed Samsung Galaxy S8 and OnePlus 5 smartphones. Although it's not clear exactly when HTC will formally launch the Vive Focus, there's a good opportunity coming up. On October 4, Google is hosting a major product launch event where we're expecting to see the new Google Pixel 2 smartphone announced. However, Google could also use the event to showcase the new Vive Focus, given the Daydream VR support. It's also worth noting that Google is heavily rumoured to be working on an acquisition of HTC, which makes such an announcement seem even more likely.
