Google's Assistant is officially in a pair of Bose headphones with a dedicated button to fire up the virtual assistant and bark commands at it.
The much rumoured and teased Bose QuietComfort 35 II headphones connect via Bluetooth to a wearer's smartphone running Android Marshmallow or later or using the Google Assistant app on iPhone.
After a simple setup the Google Assistant can be activated through a press of a button on the left ear can and give voice commands which are picked up by the headphones' built-in microphone system, which Bose claims is advanced enough to make pickup voice commands in noisy and windy conditions.
While Bose claims that the Google Assistant is on-board the QC 35 II, it relies upon the connection with a wearer's smartphone to carryout all the voice command processing, with the headphones taking care of the processing and transfer of the audio side of the voice commands.
Adding the Google Assistant to a pair of headphones, according to Tomer Amarillio, project manager at Google's Assistant division, is a way to get something done with the Google Assistant without handling your phone and potentially having prying eyes see what you're up to.
"Sometimes you need something a bit more personal, just for you to hear. And that's where headphones come into play. Like when you're commuting on the train or reading at home. It would be nice to get on-the-go help from your Assistant, without glancing at your phone," said Amarillio.
Other than adding the Google Assistant into the mix, the QC 35 II headphones are pretty similar to their predecessor the QuietComfort 35. The second-generation headphones are also wireless and feature noise cancelling, a 20 hour battery-life, and main controls on the right hand cup. The price of the QC 35 II also remains at a wallet-emptying $350/£330 and comes in both silver and black colour options.
It would appear that putting virtual assistants into wearables beyond smartwatches is in vogue, particularly as Amazon is reportedly working on a pair of smart glasses that offer connectivity to its Alexa smart assistant.
