Leaked images of BlackBerry's next smartphone the Krypton has a design that looks to stand out from the rounded edges and glass backs of phones like Samsung's Galaxy S8 and Apple's iPhone X.
A pair of images surfaced on BlackBerry's BBM Channels and claim to be photos of the Krypton handset, though the source of the pictures was not completely certain that they were indeed BlackBerry's upcoming all-touch smartphone.
But if the images are legit, then the Krypton looks to be sporting a carbon fibre rear, giving it a back panel that's a little different to other phones on the market.
Speaking of the back panel, the images show the Krypton making use of a dual LED flash for its rear camera which will sit in round housing rather than the pill-shaped cutout found in BlackBerry's KEYone flagship.
The pictures don't shed much light on the other specs of the Krypton, but an FCC filing shows that the handset has been green-lit for release, while certifications from Bluetooth SIG and the Wi-Fi Alliance also suggest the reveal of the Krypton is imminent.
The Krypton is expected to have a 5.2-inch or 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1088, with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 625 chipset, paired with 4GB of RAM, helping push the display's pixels. BlackBerry's security software DTEK and HUB are expected to feature alongside Android 7.0 Nougat. Other predicted specs include IP67 water and dust resistance and a home button embedded fingerprint scanner.
All-in-all, the Krypton appears to be a mid-range smartphone in a similar vein to BlackBerry's DTEK60 mobile; but BlackBerry reportedly has one ace up its sleeve in the form of a 4,000mAh battery pack which should keep the Krypton powered-up for around two days, a boon for people who use BlackBerry mobiles for secure messaging and working while in the move.
BlackBerry has struggled for some time in the smartphone arena, thanks to stiff competition from Apple, Samsung, LG and HTC among others, but it still holds on to designing hardware regardless, despite having a focus on pushing out secure mobile software and services. But the Krypton could be the phone to renew attention in BlackBerry as well as help get people using its baked-in software.
