Google's Pixel 2 might have a squeezable frame and a more flexible Google Assistant Sep 19th 2017, 09:51, by Roland Moore-Colyer The Google Pixel 2 could have squeezable frame in a similar vein to the HTC U11, as well as more customisation for the Google Assistant and ambient sounds to soothe you asleep. By digging into the code behind the latest beta build of the Google app on Android, 9to5Google found strings of code that go some way to revealing the features the Pixel 2 could have. Most notable is the 'Active Edge', which, if the code deep dive is correct, could see the Pixel 2 feature flexible edges on its chassis that users can squeeze to activate certain functions. Given that the Pixel 2 is set to be built by HTC, which pioneered the squeezable frame earlier this year, it won't be too much of a surprise if the rumours are correct and Active Edge does indeed bring squeezable sides to the Pixel 2. The code also revealed that there'll be an option to choose the voice of the Google Assistant rather than be stuck with its default voice, and custom 'hotwords' can be created to choose how the Google Assistant is fired up beyond the phrase 'OK Google'. Google also appears to be expanding its work on Shortcuts for Android, which allowed for custom and user-defined phrases to trigger the Google Assistant to carry out a specific task such as turning off connected lights when the user says 'goodnight'. The expanded feature seems to be dubbed 'routines' and looks to offer the ability to do multiple things from one phrase rather than a single set task. Other features set to make their way to the Pixel 2, include the ability to play ambient noise from an expanded library to help people sleep, tell the Google Assistant to resume playing the last podcast a person listened to, and the ability to customise the Google search bar in Android with more colours and designs. While the features the code has thrown up don't paint the Pixel 2 as a smartphone with a suite of headline features, they do indicate that the Google-designed mobile will still be a solid upgrade over the Pixel at both the hardware and software levels.
