Amazon Prime Student offers six-month free trail and discounted subscription with no catch Sep 14th 2017, 15:16, by Roland Moore-Colyer Summer is over and winter is coming, but Amazon is making things a little more palatable for UK students by offering a six-month free trial of its Prime services, then a 50% discount for a year's subscription. The Prime Student promotion is currently underway, so students returning to school or starting a placement will want to sign-up soon if they aim to get a half-price Prime subscription; students will only need to pay £39 for the year after the six-month trial period comes to an end. For that sum, which is around the same amount Sony charges for its PlayStation Plus subscription, Amazon will offer access to its Prime Video service with thousands of TV shows and films available for streaming in Full HD and 4K, unlimited one-day delivery on Amazon orders, access to its music streaming service, early access to flash sales and deals, and access to student-only offers, such as 10% off the price of textbooks. Any students who get cold feet before or after the trail period finishes can quit the Prime Student deal at anytime, safe in the knowledge that Amazon won't apply any penalties for Prime drop-outs. The only potential caveat to the deal is that Amazon wants to know a student's university or academic institution's email address, their expected graduation date, academic level, the subject they are studying, alongside their payment details. It could be argued that's a lot of data Amazon wants students to surrender, which it could feed into its various recommendation algorithms, though a counter argument would be that Amazon is simply trying to prevent non-students from sneaking onto its exclusive promotion. The promotion looks to be a good way to get students, notorious for the rather large amounts of free time they have, hooked on its Prime Video service, potentially stealing some of the attention away from rival Netflix, which is enjoying success with a bevy of original programmes.
